What a difference a year makes... CHAMPIONS!

Our Boys last year (top). Our Champions this year (bottom).

What a difference a year makes.

A year ago, we sent our boys to take part in a friendly 5-vs-5 basketball competition organised by Jurong Secondary. We sent one team as we were not sure how we would perform. As the boys had only just started training then, there was not much expectations. They were also a young Junior Team against much stronger Senior Teams. True to form, they were also soundly beaten. As some boys would recall then, we lost by as much as 52-2.

This year, on 9th November, our boys returned once more to the courts of Jurong Secondary to compete in their annual 5-vs-5 competition. This time we entered as Seniors. Due to the team's growth, we could also compete as 2 teams - Team A and B. Team B gave their best but were eliminated after garnering 2 wins and 2 losses in the first round. Our story does not end here, as Team A would go on to sweep all their games in rounds 1 and 2 to emerge as the champions of the Jurong 5-vs-5 competition!

Our Senior Boys Team A would win each of their games with a deadly mix of panache, skill and swashbuckling play. Like a hot knife through butter, they would scythe through their opponents on their way  to the basket. Where individual play was stopped, the team passed their way into the zone before scoring crucial baskets. Whenever the opponent seemed to step up their game, our Senior boys never waivered or waned. They would press harder on the defence and obliterate their foes with their stinging offence.

There were plenty of games to savour that day and the parents and supporters who joined us were treated to a boundless display of lethal scoring and accurate passes accompanied by a relentless defence. The Senior Boys would play 7 games and win all 7 that day. The boys won for themselves a medal each and $300 in Popular vouchers which was shared not just by the players in Team A but also with the players in Team B. As a team, they share their defeats and their triumphs, their joy and sorrow.

THEY ARE A TEAM, A BAND OF BROTHERS.
HOWEVER DIFFERENT THEY ARE IN TALENT OR ABILITY;
THEY ALL BLEED NANYANG BLUE.

We congratulate our Senior Boys on their triumph and hope that this would spur them to greater glory and achievements.

Next up, the Senior Falcons head to Taipei, Taiwan to take part in a provincial tournament organised by Nangang Primary School. Let us wish them all the best in their endeavours!

NYPS Basketball June Camp 2013 - Day 3

Day 3 of the Basketball Camp begin with a hearty breakfast of bread, eggs, sausages and sandwich spreads.

After breakfast, the pupils were told to tidy and clean up their rooms to prepare for the end of camp.
When the area cleaning was complete, the pupils gathered to vote for their favourite mascot to lead Nanyang Basketball. After a round of intense voting, the pupils decided to be known as Nanyang Falcons.

The various teams took turns to present their ideas and drawings.

The winning design and mascot name.

As the camp drew to a close, we arranged for prizes to be given away to the Best Team, Best Girl Camper, Best Boy Camper and Most Improved Player.

The prizes which were kindly bought and sponsored by our parents.

Here is a picture of the best team with their new water bottles and gym towels.

At the end of camp, all basketballers were also given a collar pin which they can start wearing from Term 3 onwards. The collar pin is to be won on the left collar for the boys and above the name tag for the girls.

We look forward to next year's camp 2014!

NYPS Basketball June Camp 2013 - Day 2

We started the second day of camp with a quick morning stretch and workout before heading to the nearby Bukit Timah Food Centre for breakfast. Each team was allocated an amount of money for breakfast and team captains had to help plan and order meals for their younger team mates. It was good to see the older boys and girls working together to serve their younger peers. The teams were happy to enjoy their breakfast of fishball noodles, chee cheong fun and fried bee hoon.

We walked back to school after breakfast. Fortunately for us, Game 7 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals was being played in the United States. This was a tight series featuring the Miami Heat against the Indiana Pacers. The team that wins this final game 7 of the series would proceed on the NBA Finals to compete against the San Antonio Spurs. Thanks to a parent, we were able to stream the NBA Finals live for the basketballers to enjoy. Coach Ong was even sporting enough to join us in the morning to analyse the game for the pupils. He explained the different playing styles of the 2 teams and the basketball plays to watch for.

The game was a resounding victory for the Miami Heat and they would even go on to win the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. After watching the game, the students had a simple lunch before preparing to host Choa Chu Kang Primary for a friendly match. Choa Chu Kang Primary had graciously accepted our invitation to come down for a friendly game.

Our parent volunteers, Khim and Regina, helping to wrap prizes and souvenirs for the players of both schools.

The boys and girls from Nanyang Primary and Choa Chu Kang Primary. A few of them had also won basketballs kindly sponsored by the Nanyang parent volunteers.

After the friendly games, the campers then showered and cleaned themselves up to prepare for the barbecue night. Food and Drinks were all kindly sponsored by our parent volunteers. Thank you parents!

Each team was allocated a barbecue pit along with food trays and tongs.

Along with the uncooked food, many parents also prepared cooked beehoon, fishballs and other delights for the party.

The pupils had lots of fun in the barbecue!

Parents were reminded not to help in cooking and to let their children serve them!

The Nanyang Basketball Family grows bigger and stronger!

NYPS Basketball June Camp 2013 - Day 1

The Nanyang Basketballers started bright and early by gathering at the Toh Tuck Campus on 3rd June 2013. The camp kicked off with a training session with Coach Ong. Coach was happy to see 36 campers, boys and girls, training with him.

Meanwhile, Mr Eugene Ng, took the parents on a tour of the camp site and answered their queries about camp. Many campers were very excited to take part in their first camp. They were anxious, excited and so were their parents.

After training, the campers were briefed on the camp rules. The rules form the acronym SBBALL:-

S - Safety First
B - Buddy System
B - Be Clean
A - Act Fast, Move Quick
L - Listen to Instructions
L - Let's Have Fun!

They were then shown their bunks and told to conduct an area cleaning to ensure that their sleeping area was clean. We were fortunate to have the use of the Air-conditioned Music and Dance Studios to use for the camp. Following an inspection of cleanliness, the campers were allowed to wash up before lunch was served. Lunch was a simple meal of rice, vege, egg and meat.

After lunch, the basketballers were led on a re-envisioning exercise. They were shown videos of successful teams like Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat and L.A.Lakers. They were also shown videos of our own Nanyang Boys team in competitive action. The basketballers were told to think about a mascot and name for Nanyang Basketball. At the end of the exercise, names such as Nanyang Lightning, Nanyang Ninjas, Nanyang Tigers, Nanyang Thunder, Nanyang Rhinoes and Nanyang Falcons were thought up by the campers. They even made drawings and designs for the new team logo. The campers would vote the next day for their favourite design and name.

At the end of the re-envisioning exercise, the campers were then instructed to prepare for their hike to Bukit Timah Summit. Before setting off, they were given a safety briefing and water parade. The following are pictures of our campers as they made their way up the hill.

Start of the hike from Toh Tuck Campus to the foot of Bukit Timah Hill.

At the foot of Bukit Timah Hill where the Ranger Station and Park Office is located.

Mr Ng, stopping to allow everyone to catch their breath and taking the opportunity to share about the history of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve as a granite quarry and primary rainforest.

Our students walking up the sloping path.
Some resorted to trying to walk backwards to relieve the strain on their knees.

Mr Ng sharing about the forest canopy and how plants compete for light in a dense rainforest.

We made it to the top!

Campers sharing their snacks at the summit of Bukit Timah hill.

The teachers and campers are proud that everybody completed the hike to the top of the hill.
Even our little ones from Primary 2 prevailed and did not give up.
Campers on their way down the hill.

Having completed the long and challenging hike up the summit of Bukit Timah, the campers were rewarded with a nice meal at King Albert Park Macdonalds.

After a nice hearty dinner, campers headed back to their bunks to wash up and prepare for bed. Lights out came at 1030pm.

Good night Campers!

Suspension of Basketball Training from 22 April to 20 May

Dear Parents and Nanyang Basketballers,

Basketball Training has been suspended till 20 May.

Our next Basketball Training will commence again on Thursday, 23rd May for the Devt Team and Girls Team; and on Friday, 24th May for the Seed Team.

Do ask you child to continue practicing ball drills at home. He or she does not necessarily need a coach or the court to improve in ball skills. All they need to do is practice, practice and practice.

Training will continue this Saturday, 5th May, for the Development Team from 0730-0930.
Take note that training will be held at Toh Tuck Campus this Saturday.

This training is not compulsory as we are aware that some of the students require more time for revision.
However we hope that you can continue to bring your child down for training. It is a form of exercise which can help your child relieve stress. We also wish to open this Saturday's training for the Girls Team as they are missing the mid-week training.

Warmest Regards,

Mr Eugene Ng

Training Schedules

Dear All,

Please note your training dates and schedules.

For Nanyang Girls Team, training on Thursday is compulsory. We hope you will come on Fridays for additional practice especially with your basic ball handling skills.
In Nanyang we have a basketball philosophy based on the human fist. When we play, we play well and we play hard. Like a fist. There are five core playing skills which we hope to inculcate in every Nanyang Basketballer. We hope they carry these skills with them as they grow to be better players and students.

"A basketball team is like the 5 fingers on your hand.
If you can get them all together, you have a fist.
That's how I want you to play"

Basketball camp

This morning, 38 kids from CCA group and school team ranging from P1-P5 reported at 7.30am. They were split into 4 groups namely Miami Heats, LA Lakers, Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics.

From 8-10am, they were led by coach Ong in doing warmups and drills. After which they had simple tea break of milo and cake. At 10.30am, it was ice breaking games and getting to know one another.

At 12, it was time to cook their own lunch. Before that, they were briefed by Mr Eugene on fire safety regarding usage of mess tins and stoves. He did a cooking demo of instant noodles with veggies, egg and sausages. Then the kids went to their various groups to set up the cooking area at the library garden. The older P5 boys and girls took over the cooking job and served the younger ones before finally tucking in to their own cooked meal. Can see that they are very pleased and deserved a pat on their backs for a job well done. The younger ones then helped out on scouring the mess tins and cleaning up the place.

After lunch, it was to watch videos of great NBA players to analyse their game and share what they can learn from them.

From 3.30-5.30pm, it was time to hit the basketball court for mini games. While the younger group played mini games, the older boys played 3 on 3. After a short debrief, the kids broke camp and headed home. Hopefully though tired but inspired to play more basketball. Hope the kids have forged new bonds and may the fellowship continues when they see one another back in school after this 1 week term break.
